The water blower is a must-have for Doodle owners, but also for all other dog owners. Simply put, it's a dog hair dryer that's very practical to use. However, some dogs need some time to get used to the sound and the sudden blast of air. It's crucial to socialize your dog with the water blower from 12 weeks of age. In this blog post, we'll provide a short step-by-step guide on how best to get your dog used to this blowing monster!
Step 1:
Start with a regular handheld hairdryer. For the first few days, just blow air into the air and reward the dog when it stays calm. If he doesn't stay calm, move further away. Leave the hairdryer somewhere in the back of the garden and gently blow it in the opposite direction. Only move on to the next step if your dog can behave normally and relaxed when the hairdryer is on in the same room.
Step 2:
First , say "blow-dry," then briefly blow the dryer gently (not directly into the face, but onto the body), and immediately reward with "good boy" and a treat. Repeat this several times. Pay attention to the order: first say, then blow, then reward. This makes it predictable what's coming and allows you to warn the dog that something is coming. Gradually increase the duration. Only turn up the blow-dryer when the lowest setting works perfectly and your dog isn't showing any stress or anxiety. If the dog runs away, simply leave the blow-dryer there and wait for it to return. Sometimes a dog needs a time-out. Therefore, always do this exercise with a loose dog. This way, the dog can stay within its boundaries.
Step 3:
If your dog seems relaxed on the highest setting of the handheld dryer, you can use the water blower. The nozzle on most blowers can be removed, which makes the air flow much softer. Do exactly the same as above with the water blower without the nozzle, and gradually increase the blower speed. Watch for signs of stress and anxiety. You can also increase the distance between you and your dog if he's still nervous.
Step 4:
Place the mouthpiece on the blower and repeat step 2
Step 5:
When a blower is on high, it makes a loud noise when you blow close to the dog's fur. Most dogs are startled by this. Create this noise by blowing the blower against your hand (so you can hear the sound) and then reward the dog. Be sure to repeat the last two steps for a few more days.
Step 6:
Now you can move closer and closer with your blower so he can hear that sound on his own body. Take it step by step and then enjoy the convenience of a water blower!
